What celebrity do you most often get told you resemble?

Liv Tyler. But it's been a while, I am not sure that still stands :)
I am back in San Francisco as of yesterday and thrilled to be home. I love traveling but after two weeks I miss my apartment, bed, Rigo, and the sun. Being in China and Bangkok reminded me of how luck I am to live in a city that is sunny practically everyday with blue skies and clean air. Needless to say, I am plan to soak up some sun before heading back to the office tomorrow.
It's 5am now and I am bright eyed and bushy tailed due to jetlag. Truthfully, sleeping through the night until 5am would be considered a success by most travelers. I am actually sort of excited to be up so early since I have a ton of wedding things to catch up on and there is no better (or more quiet time) to do it then the ass crack of dawn. The flaw in my plan? I don't have any milk. No milk = no coffee. That's ok, I am having some of this lovely flower tea I bought in china, that will hold me over until I make it to a Peets!
Ok, off I go to be super productive :)
Ok, quick update. We made it to Jim Thompson's house- it was quite an experience. His traditional teak houses transport you back to another world and have really helped me to see and understand the roots of thai culture. In a place like bangkok, so crowded and urban, it's easy to get lost in the city and never really understand the culture. Visiting historical places make it much easier to imagine the country as it was over 50 years ago...before skytrains, huge shopping centers, and mass tourism.
Before heading back to the house we decided to stop for foot massages. They were DIVINE. I am not sure I can do them justice with a written description, suffice it to say that if you ever come to Bangkok you MUST make time for a thai massage everyday. I mean, everyday. And if you don't, don't tell me about it- that qualifies as blasphemy in my book.
i'm not really in the heart of darkness, it just feels like it as dark clouds gather gather overhead. the wind is picking up and swirling around us in a restless sort of way...almost like it's pushing you indoors before the rain comes. i love thunderstorms in the afternoon. as a matter of fact, i have been sitting outside in the thai sala all afternoon reading and hoping to catch one of these tropical wonders. of course, it's been like 4 hours now that i have been waiting and i have officially finished all of my books...i finally decided to head inside to write for a bit and what do i hear? thunder. typical.
it's been a super lazy day today. my energy was zapped from visiting the "JJ Market", formally kown as the Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok. The market is HUGE- over 3,000 stalls and divided into 26 sections. Honestly, I think if you can't find it here then it doesn't exist. shopping in markets is probably my absolutely favorite thing to do when traveling, more then museums or monuments, palaces or restaurants, I LOVE MARKETS. i am a collector of handicrafts from all over the world; my apartment looks like pier 1. yesterday i found a set of brass silverware that i have been coveting and specifically came to thailand hoping to find. my dad has a set from when my parents where in thailand almost 30 years ago and i have always wanted a set of my own- now i do! i also bought a beautiful piece of empriodered thai silk to hang on my wall and a wooden carved lantern (pictures to follow, i can't upload them until i get to my sisters!). i guess the reason that i love to collect handcrafts where ever i go is that they live in my house and remind me of all the adventures i have been on around the world, even when i am stuck in the mundane routine of my own working world. fortunately, my saving grace in the world of shopping wonders (at least in asia) is that i am too big in size to buy any clothing or shoes here- i am about 9 inches taller then the typical thai woman and i wear a size 10 shoe. if that wasn't the case i would have lovingly spend my life savings long ago.
We (my mother and I) are in Bangkok. It's our second day here and already I feel like I've been folded into the hussle and bussle of this old Thai city forever. It helps that we are staying at an old traditional thai house- actually traditional thai set-ups are more like multiple bungaloos so it's more like 3 little houses!
It's amazing, it's located all the way at the end of the road and from the street you can only see what looks like a garage door made out of teak wood. But once you get past the door you find yourself in a secluded little jungle, with the bungaloos nestled between huge trees and a plethera of potted plants. They even have a little sala, which is an open platform with the traditional thai rooftop, covered with pillows to sit in the shade (and believe me, shade is entirely necessary here) and relax. Here are some photos of the place we are staying:Video: Show us a movie clip that always brings a lump to your throat.
